Poker has its own set of unique terms and jargon, and more are being added every week as its popularity continues to expand. There are names for particular starting hands, such as pocket rockets and big slick. There are terms describing poker scenarios, such as a bad beat. It would take a week to write them all, but I think the following list will give you a good idea of the terms you will hear used on a regular basis as you play.
- Rags
- Useless community cards which do not improve your hand.
- Rainbow
- A flop which contains three different suits.
- Raise
- To increase the amount of the current bet the other players will have to pay to stay in the hand on your turn.
- Rake
- An amount of money collected by a Casino or Web Site in exchange for the services of their dealer and facilities.
- Represent
- To pretend to have a certain hand or card by betting strongly.
- Ring game
- Regular poker game played with real money (as opposed to a Tournament).
- River
- The last (5th) community card dealt in poker games such as Texas Hold'em and Omaha.
- Rock
- A very tight player who only plays the best hands.
- Rounder
- A person who plays poker on a frequent basis, often as a living.
- Runner/Runner
- A Hold'em and Omaha term describing when a player catches two cards on the Turn and River to make his or her hand a winner.
