Poker has its own set of unique terms and jargon, and more are being added every week as its popularity continues to expand. There are names for particular starting hands, such as pocket rockets and big slick. There are terms describing poker scenarios, such as a bad beat. It would take a week to write them all, but I think the following list will give you a good idea of the terms you will hear used on a regular basis as you play.
- Ladies
- The Queens. A pair of Queens is also known as Ladies.
- Late Position
- Players who act last, generally sitting to the right of the dealer, are said to be in “Late Position.”
- Limp In
- When a player just calls the blind instead of raising before the flop.
- Live blind
- A blind is a forced bet made before any cards are dealt. A blind is said to be "live" if the player still has the option of raising when the action gets back to him.
- Live One
- Referring to a Fish who is playing wildly by calling many hands and betting frequently.
- Loose
- A player who plays many hands, often aggressively.
