Poker professional Andrew Lichtenberger won the WPT Alpha8 Las Vegas event that had a buy-in of $100,000. A total of 55 players put the up big entry fee which meant a prize pool of more than $5 million dollars. Lichtenberger was able to defeat the strong field and take home the first place prize of more than $2.1 million dollars.
This even attracted a number of high profile poker pros that didn’t make the money including Antonio Esfandiari, Dan Smith, Erik Seidel, JC Tran, and others. Only six places were paid in this tournament which meant that two of the final eight players would not make the money. Those two players were Phil Laak and Brandon Steven. When it got down to heads-up play it was Lichtenberger against Tom Marchese and it was Marchese who had a slight lead in chips. The two traded the lead for a while before the big hand of the tournament occurred. Marchese had a pair of 8’s while Lichtenberger had Q-9 of clubs. The flop of J-4-4 had two clubs so Lichtenberger had a flush draw and he hit it with a king of clubs on the turn. Lichtenberger won the hand and the tournament.
